At first, I thought that they don’t need to start off their lives with this technology, but they’re going to eventually anyway right? I grew up in the 80’s so I never had this (so I’m old school). But I guess this technology is here to stay. I just don’t like that we’re so detached from each other now because of it. (Texting and not talking at the dinner table, restaurants, etc.). Oh well, I don’t know, and if they are learning good things, I suppose it’s good.
Jack

This mode of learning for kids looks like a winner. I like the fact that the tablet is designed for kids to use. And that the packaging is inviting to kids. I can see how using software designed to teach kids can be very effective. You provided an array of learning examples, I checked out the video ads. The fact that the child can play games on these tablets makes them very versatile.
As part of the learning process when the child completes an assignment are they rewarded with immediate access to a game? If so that would be very cool.
Overall this was an instructive article for parents. It would have been even more effective if there were more testimonials. Fortunately, the product speaks for itself.
Thanks for bringing this option of parents helping their kids learn using tech at their own pace. The possibilities are endless. And I can see a good affiliate business opportunity. The article doesn’t mention the cost anywhere. I found out that the price is shown when the purchaser clicks the link for more information and to make a purchase. They seem very reasonably priced that makes these attractive buys.
Good job overall.

My son is starting Kindergarten this fall, so learning to read is very much on the horizon. We did a reading program at home this year and he was making awesome progress. However, it progressed too quickly for him, so we got stuck. His motivation waned and we have been on an extended break. Perhaps a tablet would be a good idea to get him excited about it all again. We have some other LeapFrog products and my son loves them. I’m sure the Leap Pad is just as good.

Jack you really did a splendid job with this review. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I too have a passion for helping kids to learn to read and have been doing this for several years. I believe you that kids can read be reading fluently at 3.5 years because I taught my son to read and at 3 he was already reading – even before preschool.
Reading opens so many other doors of opportunity and brings with it a level of independence that is unmatched.
The LeapFrog and Leap Pad line of devices are fantastic for engaging kids – they do not feel like they are ‘learning’ but they are.

I actually introduced my four year old boy to one of my tablets this week after reading one of your very own articles last week – I had no idea about the sheer volume of educational and well-thought apps available to kids under the age of five (very impressive!).
I’m wondering if you know of any direct reading apps for kids at this age (4) off hand that I could start with? Or would you just recommend getting a child-friendly eBook on the tablet, to begin with?

It is really a joy to watch as a child develops their vocabulary. I have always done this the manual way by personally teaching the child how to read and improve their fluency with colorful books but I have never done this using a tablet or an app. It is a method that I would have to try out because technology makes things so much easier.
While the child is learning, the child would be having fun in the process. It is like killing two birds with one stone. I would have to check out your recommendations as I feel they would be really useful to how I intend to teach my kids from now on.
