As a blogger, I’ve found that reading posts from my fellow bloggers have been an excellent way to learn. As a matter of fact, access to other blogs has introduced me to things and cultural practices I never even knew existed!
While I am all for young children learning information using technology, I also think it’s something that should be supervised, especially with toddlers, because some things that can be accessed via the internet have content that isn’t suitable for children under 12. So, as long as adults make sure to put parental blocks on any device their child/children have access to, everything should go smoothly.
I also think it’s important to note that while technology can be a great learning tool, one thing it can’t teach is human interaction. Sure, you can read things about body language, but making sure there is a limit to how much time children (and sometimes even adults) spend online is another way to make sure they learn how to communicate with other humans the old-fashioned way.

Hi Jack,
I must say this is something I enjoy right along with the kids. There are so many choices in learning tablets today, you wonder where to begin. Now, I found some help with this site. Christmas is coming, and you have brought some great gift idea to mind. However, as you point out, those parental controls are a must. I think the younger kids, just love to do things on their own, and have no idea about the trouble lurking on the internet. Especially, on those social sites!
All in all I like that Fire hd tablet, and I think it would be worth it to get the more expensive one without ads. And I can sneak on it to visit amazon for stuff. My grandson is younger and I personally think he might like the leappad 3. He is only 4 yrs old. I know these kids love these tablets, but then you can’t get them off! How do we keep these kids from having their noses in the tablets constantly.
Thanks for the great site Jack!

There are so many wonderful opportunities for kids to learn nowadays. Even games that don’t appear to be educational on face value often are in some way. I think one of the reasons my kids love maths so much and are really good at it is due to mathletics. We build that into their homework schedule each weeknight and they enjoy it while they’re learning.
I had never thought about them blogging before. They’re still too young but you have given me an idea – wondering if I should buy a domain name for them both with their name? Then maybe when they’re older if they want to use it they can. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jack, You’ve really covered a number of ways to enhance a child’s learning through technology. While I love the idea of educational games and video streaming for learning, my favorite option here would be ebooks. As you pointed out, they eliminate the need to carry cumbersome texts. The added benefit it that besides texts, students have access to everything else they’d like to read as well. Learning devices really make tremendous amounts of knowledge available to our children.
