All You Need To Know About Learning Tablets in Preschool

Just because toddlers enjoy pushing buttons and watching videos may not imply that they are ready for a computer. Kids are explorative. And fun learning experts recommend that you wait until your child hits preschool age.

Usually, children under two years old enjoy learning from real-world experiences and interactions. Gradually, they can begin to spend in front of a screen-based device whenever they are no longer exploring the world. Most importantly, they need to learn from the environment as they progress into digital learning. According to Dr. Carolyn Jaynes, a learning designer for Leapfrog Enterprises, your child’s learning journey should be fun and engaging.

By age three, many kids become active media users. Even better, kids find electronic media with educational content interactive. Often, this content uses strategies such as presenting images and sounds and repeating an idea that captures attention. Besides, the best fun learning tablet uses child instead of adult voices for the characters.

Experts recommend that parents get involved in their kid’s experience with electronic devices, especially when they are young. The main objective is to create a balanced exposure for kids to explore and learn.

However, parents must keep the media screens in family areas. This will make sure that the child’s media usage is monitored, and TVs and computers are kept out of the bedrooms. On the other hand, it helps kids to get more out of tablet computers by sharing their experiences.

Typically, this practice is called “co-viewing” and it can be applied to TV-watching and increase your child’s comprehension skills.

How To Raise Your Child In The Digital Age!

Limit Screen Time

Experts from fun learning devices recommend that preschoolers should take no more than half an hour in a sitting. Aside from that, high schoolers should take no more than two hours per sitting when gaming or learning virtually. This can hurt the eyes.

As your child advances in age and experience, you should allow more freedom. Fun learning device experts suggest using a gradual release model. Here, you will allow your child more time with the tablet as they prove that they can handle it. On top of that, you need to keep in mind the risk of eye problems. Sometimes, that is caused and accelerated by prolonged exposure to screen time.

Content Matters

Whether you opt for an ordinary tablet through a wireless carrier or any other computer tablet, there is plenty of kid-friendly content to consider. On top of that, it is important to focus on the quality and type of content when making age-appropriate media choices.

Certainly, what your child watches and plays matters. Certainly, you need to distinguish between educational and entertainment-based content. Additionally, you should find out if the content listed on the app is age-appropriate. But most importantly, you should keep in mind what your child can handle.

Oh wow, I just cannot believe that now the learning devices are available to toddlers now. I remembered back in the days, we only had one PC for the family and we all fought for it. I have to say that technology has come such a long way and it is very affordable as well. I am still debating between LeapFrog and AmazonFire. They both look promising, I  have to think over this. Thanks for your amazing reviews and tips!

Good summary of available tablets for kids.  I didn’t know there were so many child-friendly options.  I think kids are exposed to so much new technology and ideas, it’s hard to keep up and know what the best options are to help your child learn but also take care of their eyes.  And if it can make learning fun for kids, they will be happy to learn new things as they get older.

Thank you for this great information! Online programs, learning and devices are a face of life these days, even for the younger set.  I appreciate your tips for making online activities safe and fun. Far too many parents assume a “kid-friendly” device or settings can protect their children from inappropriate content or injury but the only real solution is parental supervision.  Your recommendations for learning tablets are also very helpful.

Thanks for sharing some recommendations for products and strategies to help younger kids learn with electronics in a way that is good for their overall health and well-being. Having parental controls is a huge advantage (not having that is a deal-breaker) and a drop-resistant case is smart for anything expensive that a child will be using! Thank you again for the recommendations which have made my shopping a lot easier!

  5. NoBossExperience

Yesterday I was waiting for the bus and a little girl and her mother were sited on my left. She was about 3 years old. As soon as I put my tablet out, the child leans on my side, curious. This is how technology is attractive to those kids.

I own a Galaxy Tab A, actually. 4 years later it still works almost as well as it did the first day. So, I’m not surprised that you put the Kid Edition first on your list. Yes, the camera is so-so. This could only be a problem for adults.

I recommend this model to all the parents looking for a tablet for their kids.

Oh wow. I had no idea that there were so many options in the tablets-for-kids niche. While these devices certainly seem like they would attract a child, I wonder how many parents will take the time to educate themselves on the importance of mitigating screen time for children. From my understanding, the more time a child spends looking at screens, the less empathetic they are and the more limited their vocabulary.

I understand that children need to learn to use technology in order to take advantage of the opportunities it provides. But I believe too few parents understand that what children need most is not screens and devices, but attention and social interaction. As a consequence, children are becoming less empathetic. I highly recommend the book “Born For Love” to learn more about this.

This was a great review to read on the why and matter of getting a child a tablet. I’ve often observed children using these, even 3-year-olds, and I think they are a wonderful learning tool. Especially, as these children are growing up in a digital age and will compete against their peers in computer-related jobs when they are older.

I appreciated the warning on time usage as I hadn’t considered that it would strain their eyes. Good time limits, a half-hour for very young and 2 hours for teenagers (that is if you can get them to stop.)

I really liked the Amazon Fire HD 10 kids edition as it looks robust enough to survive and very colorful.

I am always surprised at what comes out within today’s digital age. I am a millennial but as a kid to learn, I had to read books. When my parents got a computer things changed.

Kids have everything at the tip of the fingers but it is so easy to get distracted. Even I do as an adult which is why I agree having the devices out in open places is a great idea!!!
